Family

The vast majority of Pernese people come from a stable and reasonably happy family - they need to have strong ties to survive! "But," I can hear you say, "I don't _know_ anybody yet." That's okay! We have thousands of people on Pern that exist only as characters in our minds, without players. You can make up your parents, and just refer to them as you normally might. Later on, you may find a family you want to ask to join, or have people ask you if they can be your siblings - and that's a great way to broaden your roleplaying! Orphans and abused children running away have been _sadly_ overdone on PernMUSH to the point where some people won't even respond to people claiming this background. It's probably best to leave this particular sort of background alone, especially on your first character. The basic considerations are:

  1. Which child are you in the sibling order?
  2. Did you get along with the older siblings? Younger siblings? Parents?

Now, let's consider Colin:

  1. Mother: Sari is a plump, short woman that is thoroughly hold bred. Her dislike of riders and weyrfolk is legendary at Ista Sea Hold.
  2. Father: Acan is a jolly fellow, chubby, with red cheeks, piercing blue eyes and a shiny head that has no hair. Like his wife, they both work for the Holder in the capacity of recordkeepers.
  3. Siblings: Two. Brother, Maerid and sister, Eledri.
  4. Which child are you in the sibling order? Colin is the middle child
  5. Did you get along with ...?
Siblings? Maerid always thrived on drama - usually his own. He went out of his way to pick on Colin. The boys never stopped fighting, much to the chagrin of their parents. Colin's sister Eledri, on the other hand, was his favorite. She was a bit slower than most kids so Colin tended to stick up for her all the time. They are close.
Parents? Colin loves his parents, even if they do seem to be behind on the times. His mother, however, sometimes gets on his last nerve when she preaches about riders and Weyrs. He secretly hopes he will be searched one day by their local Weyr.

There, that was pretty easy. It isn't necessary to have actual PC family to have a decent family history going.
